Niskayuna boys basketball sharpshooter Gabe Eldaye was recognized by NYS Section 2 basketball Prep Hoops scout Dillon Murphy as a top 5 sharpshooter and Section 2 ‘Juniors To Watch’.
“It does feel good to get recognized but I take it with a grain of salt,” said Eldaye. “The worst thing I can do is let it get to my head and try to prove myself to other people and try to stay true to what made them think that I should be recognized.”
Eldaye and the Silver Warriors have played three games so far. Defeating Columbia 53-44, Averill Park 62-30, and losing to Troy 61-40. Their next matchup is against Schenectady on Thursday, 2/18 at 4:30.
Eldaye joined “The Section 2 Show” episode one releasing on Friday 2/19 (Link in “Podcasts’ section). When asked about his team’s expectations for the 2021 season he responded, “If there is anything to distinguish who the best team is, we want that.”
In hopes of more than just a regular season, whatever a playoff may look like this year, the Niskayuna boys basketball team plans on coming out on top. Eldaye and I also talked about possible scenarios the Suburban Council could move forward with to crown a champion on episode one.
With no fans allowed, games around Section 2 have been broadcasted live on many different platforms. Schools are still getting used to virtual fans during games and trying their best to provide the parents and fans with live footage.
“It’s different… It kind of feels off. Our student section at Nisky everyone is there and it was nice feeding off their energy. But now we just have to create that energy ourselves,” said Eldaye. It’s no secret Eldaye and his team are missing the Niskayuna Red Zone.
The recruitment process for many high school athletes over the last year has been much different and in most cases a lot more challenging. “Just getting seen is honestly the hardest part. Me and my teammates have just been sending film to coaches just trying to get seen,” said Eldaye.
Eldaye and his AAU teammates at Adirondack Wild have not gotten the chance to visit any campuses. Sending film and staying in contact with college coaches becomes even more crucial during these times.
As we look ahead to the remainder of the 2021 season, Eldaye is focused on becoming more of a leader and taking more control to assure his team is successful.
